Carpathian Vampire

Holidays in Romania – 9 reasons to visit soon

Less than 20 years, Romania was an isolated, unknown land hidden behind the Iron Curtain but is now an EU country visited by a growing number of curious visitors

Romania is a place sometimes shrouded in mystery, a country that inspired the story of Count Dracula and where many legends live in the virgin field. It is also a modern and dynamic country ready to embrace the outside world.

Mountains: The Carpathians, a continuation of the Alps, covering most of the interior. The best-known resort of Poiana Brasov doubles as a ski resort in winter and a center of activity in summer, while Sinaia was the summer residence of the Romanian kings.

Vampires: The Transylvania very name is enough to send a shiver in the back, because this mountainous region inspired the Dracula legend. You will not be surprised that the legend is "bleeding" of all its value – but Vlad the Impaler was actually a real character of the medieval town of Sighisoara.

The rural tranquility: You do not have to drive far off a main road to discover a very rural country where land is still worked by hand, old fortified churches and small villages. Cottages are beginning to develop.

Charming Towns: Brasov, Sighisoara and Sibiu are small cities that developed in the Middle Ages, and now re-emerging as tourism and cultural sites. A fly on holiday car combining the cities and mountains is perfect.

City scale: The Communist dictator Ceausescu certainly left his mark in big squares in the capital Bucharest and boulevards. His palace – now the "Hall of the People" – is the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon.

Fauna: Deep in the mountains are still wolves and bears are a common sight in the Carpathians. The Danube Delta is a fine of area birders.

Beaches: The Black Sea coast includes about 150 miles from the Romanian territory, with lots of sand and a season that runs from May to October. Ugly development during the communist era is spoiled, as resorts Mamaia and Neptun, but the port city of Constanta has character.

Story: Many civilizations have left their mark in Romania, and the castles and palaces can be found everywhere. The painted monasteries of Bucovina Orthodox are a national treasure.

Food and drink: Romanian fare is abundant and usually meat, with much use of herbs. Bodied red wines are a specialty of Transylvania.

European countries are just as individual like Romania. Its turbulent history long period of isolation media is endlessly fascinating – but this is changing rapidly: now is the time to take a vacation in Romania.
