How do you write a story that flashes between past and present of the story?

I read a book (called madapple I think) that does something like that. Example: Chapter 1: Last Chapter 2: Chapter 3: the last chapter 4: How do I write this not to confuse the reader too? How to show that history is in the past or present?

If you are thinking of switching back and forth between time periods the best way to accomplish this is to do it when it suits the story. Whether or not that is the chapter by chapter. You can go through 3 chapters of this before having to return to past. Just go with what your story needs, not to lock in a specific formula. To demonstrate that they have changed in the past, you could write the year in the early chapters. Font changes are not necessary in this case. Good luck and happy writing =)
